Great Wall Tours There is really no need for much introduction to the Great Wall itself; it is quite simply one of the greatest projects ever built by human hands. There are several sections open to the public in the Greater Beijing area, and Beijing Discovery Tours can take you to each of them. These are all simply example tours to give you an idea of what to do - destinations and times can be changed. Just let us know what you would like to do and where you would prefer to stay, then we can give you an exact quote. All tours are private and include an English-speaking tour guide.

Simatai Great Wall
Simatai is one of the Great Wall’s most spectacular locations, with the Wall running along steep ridges that will have you wondering how they ever built the thing in the first place. Great views of ancient watchtowers and the surrounding countryside (a camera is a must), but be prepared for a workout as some of the climbing is very steep and physically demanding. Parts of Simatai have been recently restored but large sections still lie in their original state. Also usually less crowded than Badaling and Mutianyu. Several watchtowers can be climbed upon for the more adventurous (and if no guards are looking). There is also a cable car here that costs around 60 CNY (US$8.50), this is recommended for most people (unless you’re fairly physically fit) as the climb just to reach the Great Wall is quite demanding. There is also a “zipline” that can give you a thrilling ride over the reservoir back down to the base point. Vendors along the higher points of the Wall sell cold water and the coldest cans of beer you’ll ever find during the summer, well worth the 5 CNY (US$0.70) per can (don’t forget to bargain.)

This “Yellow Flower” section of the Great Wall is about 40 miles (65km) north of Beijing and lies completely unrestored. It rises out in both directions from a small reservoir, with one direction being relatively easy to climb but the other, more deteriorated section is more difficult. This section of the Great Wall lies between Mutianyu to the east and Huanghuacheng to the west. It was built largely of natural white boulders that give it a unique appearance even from a distance. Juyongguan Great Wall
The Juyongguan Pass section of the Great Wall is an historic section that includes nearby the magnificently carved Yuntai Cloud Terrace platform, which has a tremendous history of having ancient architecture built on top of it, including 3 pagodas, a Buddhist temple and then another temple, each of which was destroyed by one natural disaster or another. It was built between 1341 and 1345 on the orders of Emperor Zhizheng but it has stood alone now for more than 300 years.

Shanhaiguan and Laolongtou Great Wall
Laolongtou (Old Dragon’s Head) is the very eastern end of the Great Wall that ends in the sea in the city of Qinhuangdao, somewhat like a dragon taking a drink out of the ocean, hence the name Laolongtou. Shanhaiguan (Mountain Sea Pass) is the first pass through the Great Wall, also known as “The First Pass Under Heaven.” Both make for very interesting sections to visit as the fortifications were specially built at this strategic location. How many people do you know that can say they have been to the very starting point of the Great Wall of China?
